Playing in the bomb’s shadow:
Sat, 5.30pm
RPGs that riffed on the nuclear age during the Cold War are absent from most historical studies of the period from 1945 to 1989. Since the 1980s, historians have explored the cultural significance of contemporary culture which reveal the history and impact of different forms of 'nuclear culture' that emerged after 1945. RPGs are deserving of the same level of attention, as a form of popular culture that demands genuine participation and engagement. So, are you ready for a trip into the mushroom cloud? 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.....

An Oral History of Wars That Never Were: Sat, 7pm
Come along and hear all about exciting research to gather memories and reminiscences about nuclear age gaming during the Cold War era! Historian Malcolm Craig will talk about his oral history project looking post-apocalyptic games in the 1970s and 1980s. Were RPGs simply escapism or were they used to deal with the global nuclear threat? Why do memories matter? And what do road atlases have do with it all? Come along and find out!

There will be a free to use non-bookable space in Hall B that people are welcome to use.
